According to transfer news from The Sun, Chelsea are among clubs interested in signing Danish defender Joachim Andersen from Olympique Lyon in the summer.
Andersen, 24, has been with Lyon since summer but did not play all too regularly in his debut season with the club. The last campaign saw the Danish defender shipped out on loan to Fulham. Upon arrival, the centre-back quickly established himself as a mainstay at the back for the Cottagers.
Soon given the captain’s armband in the absence of Tom Cairney, Andersen impressed heavily, even though Fulham ended up getting relegated. Now back at Lyon, the 24-year-old is likely to be sold as the French club battles financial issues and does not have a place for him at the moment.
This has alerted a host of clubs in England, with Tottenham, Manchester United and Crystal Palace all said to be keen on signing Andersen, with Chelsea also now entering the fray. (h/t The Sun)
Chelsea have a number of centre-halves already at their disposal already in Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma. However, Azpilicueta and Silva are well into their thirties and will need their game-time managed while Zouma is headed for an exit this summer.
So, adding another centre-back would be a shrewd move by Thomas Tuchel & co. And, in Andersen, the Blues will be getting a Premier League-proven defender, who will also be available for a fee of just £25m.
The interest from Tottenham and Manchester may complicate matters a bit. But the Blues would do well to push for the signing of Andersen, as he will be a cost-effective solution which is important for Chelsea as they eye a record bid for Erling Haaland as well this summer.
