According to transfer news from The Sun (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is set to leave on loan again, with Crystal Palace and Newcastle United keen.
The 21-year-old Gallagher has been on the books of the club since 2008 and has progressed well through the youth ranks. Having impressed with the Chelsea U23s in 2018/19, he was loaned out to Championship outfit Charlton Athletic for the first half of the 2019/20 season. He spent the second half at Swansea City, where he played a key role in their playoff finish.
Back at Chelsea last summer, Gallagher was once again shipped out on loan, this time to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League. The English midfielder emerged as one of the few bright spots in a gloomy campaign that ended with relegation for the Baggies. He featured 32 times for the club, scoring and assisting two goals apiece.
After yet another solid loan spell, Gallagher finds himself staring at a potential temporary exit once again this summer. The 21-year-old has done well over the past two years but the options available at Thomas Tuchel’s disposal means there is no space for him in the first-team for the time being.
However, Chelsea are insistent that Gallagher will not be sold this summer, with only a loan exit being considered. And, two Premier League clubs – Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are showing a keenness to land the nine-time capped England Under-21 international.
Gallagher is still viewed as an important part of Chelsea’s long-term plans, as per the report, which is good news. And, given how packed the midfield unit is currently at the Bridge, it makes sense for the club to let the 21-year-old build more valuable experience at the Premier League level by spending another season away on loan.
