According to transfer news from Football Insider (h/t Mirror), German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are interested in securing the services of Chelsea striker Timo Werner.
Werner arrived at Chelsea only last summer in a big-money transfer worth £48m from German outfit RB Leipzig. The 25-year-old’s arrival was met with great excitement after he had enjoyed a spectacular 2019/20 campaign with the Saxony-based outfit.
However, things have not gone as per plans for Werner at Chelsea. While his tally of 12 goals and 15 assists is certainly not to be frowned upon, the numbers could have been much better, especially in the goals column, had he been more clinical with his finishing.
Indeed, over the course of the season, Werner was guilty of missing a large number of gilt-edged opportunities, while his habit of straying offside way too frequently also hurt him and Chelsea on a number of occasions.
With Olivier Giroud leaving and Tammy Abraham out of favour, Chelsea are looking to add another centre-forward this summer, which could put Werner’s position in jeopardy. And, it seems like Bayern Munich are hoping to capitalise by making a move for the German.
The Bavarian giants have a new manager at the helm in Julian Nagelsmann, who got the best out of Werner at RB Leipzig. With Robert Lewandowski now 32 and linked with an exit – Chelsea among the clubs interested – the 25-year-old Werner could be an option for the German record champions.
It will be interesting to see how Chelsea go about this development and whether it leads to some sort of swap arrangement involving Werner and Lewandowski.
For now, Bayern hold a concrete interest in Werner, as per the report.
