According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), A source close to Chelsea has revealed that the club remains determined to land Sevilla and France defender Jules Kounde.
The centre-back is one of the best young defenders on the continent and has gone from strength to strength in La Liga. Just 22, he is already an experienced player and will only get better with age.
The Blues have been aware of the youngster’s potential for around two years now. They have followed Kounde’s development with much interest and are now ready to make their move. Bringing in a solid young defender with massive potential is critical as Chelsea look to build on their UEFA Champions League success.
“Chelsea want Kounde no matter what. He has been earmarked as a player they have been wanting to buy for the past two years.”
The Blues are ready to part ways with Kurt Zouma to get the deal for Kounde over the line. While Sevilla have rejected an initial player plus cash deal for their star defender, Chelsea remain undeterred. According to the report by The Athletic (Subscription Required), they are keen to see the deal through one way or another.
Sevilla may have rejected the part exchange involving Zouma, but thankfully they are not averse to a sale. The La Liga giants are seeking a cash-only deal and could be willing to lower their demands from Kounde’s £68m release clause. (h/t The Metro)
Kounde appears to be open to a move to Chelsea and has already agreed to personal terms with the club. As things stand, the only issue holding up a deal appears to be the transfer fee. Given our determination to land him, it remains to be seen how far we are willing to meet Sevilla’s valuation.
An imposing presence at the back, the 22-year-old Frenchman would be an excellent addition to the Blues roster.
There is every reason to hope that common ground can be found between both clubs in the coming weeks. While the player is certainly not cheap, he could prove to be a smart buy if he signs for the Blues and goes on to fulfil his potential.
