Chelsea line up £50m transfer swoop for European goal machine amid Haaland doubts

Chelsea line up £50m swoop for Robert Lewandowski

According to The Sun, Chelsea are now readying a £50m swoop for Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski in case their pursuit of Erling Haaland fails to materialise.

It is no secret that Chelsea are intent on signing Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer. However, a move for the 20-year-old is looking tricky as the Bundesliga outfit recently rejected a player plus cash offer for the centre-forward. As a result, the Blues are keeping their options open, with Lewandowski now on the shortlist for Thomas Tuchel. (h/t The Sun)

Lewandowski is coming on the back of yet another spectacular season at club level with Bayern Munich, as he plundered 41 goals in the Bundesliga to help the team to the league title. In the process, he toppled a number of records. However, at 32, the Poland captain is keen on a new adventure in his career and would relish a move to the Premier League.

This has alerted Chelsea, who are now considering making a move for the Bayern Munich superstar, as an alternative for Haaland. The Blues have already lost Olivier Giroud this summer and considering Timo Werner’s profligate debut season in England and Tammy Abraham’s unfavourable situation, a new centre-forward becomes a necessity.

While Lewandowski, at 32, would not be a long-term solution, his goalscoring pedigree would certainly help Chelsea a great deal. However, Bayern Munich want to keep him at the club and are pushing for the Polish striker to sign a new contract extension, even though he still has two years left on his current deal.

More Chelsea News:

Haaland would be the ideal option for Chelsea to bolster their attack. But, it is important that the Blues do not end up putting all their eggs in a single basket and then miss out on his signing. Lewandowski is one of the best in the game and even though he is not getting any younger, would be able to give at least two prolific seasons at the Bridge.
