According to transfer news from Mirror, Chelsea are eyeing Lautaro Martinez as an alternative to Erling Haaland. The Inter Milan striker is said to be one name that Thomas Tuchel has kept in hand should Chelsea fail to land the Borussia Dortmund hitman.
The Argentine international has thrived at the San Siro since joining the club in 2018. He has so far made 132 appearances for the Nerazzurri. Martinez was a standout last season too. His 17 goals and 10 assists fired Inter Milan to their first Serie A title in a while.
The Argentine striker could be offloaded this summer after it was known that Inter Milan are in a financial mess. This is despite the Italian club winning the Serie A this season. Hence, Martinez finds himself on the radar of Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel, who are keen to add a new striker.
While Chelsea ideally want Erling Haaland and have chased him for a while, there are chances that they could miss his signing. For that, Chelsea have prepared contingency plans and that includes Lautaro Martinez. As mentioned, Inter’s financial problems mean that Martinez could be sold and Chelsea view him as an alternative to Haaland.
Martinez is perhaps a different striker than Haaland. However, at just 23 years of age, he is equally effective and is just coming off a splendid season. In the event Chelsea miss out on Haaland, they should look to go for Martinez, who has reached the Copa America final with Argentina.
