According to transfer news from the Sunderland Echo, Chelsea youngster Nathan Baxter is a wanted man ahead of the summer window, with Sunderland interested in signing him up.
Baxter is a product of the Chelsea youth academy. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been on the club’s books since 2007 and has risken through the ranks, representing the Blues across all age group levels. He has even the UEFA Youth League with the club but has never made a first-team appearance till date.
Baxter, though, has spent a lot of time out on loan in the recent years, having had stints with the Metropolitan Police FC, Solihull Moors, Woking FC, Yeovil Town and Ross County. The English shot-stopper was on a temporary spell with Accrington Stanley for the 2020/21 season, where he made 19 appearances, securing eight clean sheets.
Back at Chelsea now, Baxter is unlikely to progress into the first-team with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga locking down the two goalkeeping positions. So, another loan move could be on the cards or the club could decide to cash in on him with two years still left on his deal so as to get a good transfer fee.
And, it seems like EFL League One side, Sunderland, have shown an interest in the 22-year-old Baxter. If he leaves this summer, the Englishman will be the third goalkeeper leaving Chelsea, following in the footsteps of Willy Caballero and Jamal Blackman, both of whom were released by the club.
It remains to be seen if Sunderland do make an approach for Baxter this summer, and if so, whether Chelsea are willing to accept the offer.
