According to transfer news from Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea are set to battle Manchester United for the signing of Saul Niguez. Along with both those clubs, PSG, Bayern Munich and Juventus are also interested in the Spaniard who could be let go for £68m by Atletico Madrid.
The 26-year-old has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s stellar Atletico side the past few years. His role in the side has somewhat diminished this season, making him seek a new challenge elsewhere. He made 41 appearances in all competitions as they won the La Liga title this season. However, of his 33 appearances in La Liga, only 22 have come as starts.
Much like the rest of Europe, Atleti are feeling the pinch of the pandemic in a financial sense. They are in a position that would require them to sell players first in order to sign new ones. It has been said that the midfielder who won the La Liga this season, is looking for a new challenge.
Now, it has come to the fore that Chelsea are ready to rival Manchester United for Saul’s signature. Atletico, on their part, are willing to sell for a reduced price of around £68m. This has seen interest in the Spanish midfielder skyrocket with other European elite sides such as Bayern Munich, PSG and Juve also after him.
While Chelsea don’t overly need a midfielder, it is just good sense to refresh those options at the start of the season. The Spaniard is a classy midfielder to have at your disposal. However, with the likes of Manchester United interested, it gets a bit more challenging to get Saul now.
