According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea are ready to pay a record sum of £154.5m for Erling Haaland. The Blues were understood to be keen on a cash plus player deal. However, now they are ready to pay the aforementioned amount if Dortmund don’t accept a cash plus player deal.
The Blues have shown tremendous interest in the player along with the rest of the elite European clubs, meaning that they will have to stump up heavy cash to land him. The Norwegian is arguably the hottest prospect in the world right now and has impressed heavily at Borussia Dortmund. Europe’s biggest clubs are now circling around him.
He does have a release clause that gets activated in the summer of 2022 but a host of clubs want a deal this year itself, none more than Chelsea, who have a striker problem on their hands. Timo Werner has struggled to find goals. Tammy Abraham cannot seem to get a game and Giroud is on the wrong side of 30.
Initially, Chelsea were keen on a player plus cash deal to lower the price for Haaland. They would have offered the out of favour Tammy Abraham to Dortmund. However, should Dortmund not accept that Chelsea will make a British record bid of £154.5m. That is the amount said to be demanded by Dortmund for the signing of Haaland.
It’s not hard to guess why Chelsea are bending over backwards to sign the talented goalscorer. Chelsea might have won the Champions League. But the fact remains that they could have achieved even more with a clinical striker up front. Haaland has shown that he can do it at such a young age. Chelsea will be confident that they can get their man even if it is at a record deal.
