According to transfer news from Metro, Chelsea have made contact to sign highly-rated defender Edmond Tapsoba. However, they are not the only ones after the Bayer Leverkusen starlet. Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to be after him.
Tapsoba started out in his homeland Burkina Faso before making his way to Europe in 2017, joining Portuguese outfit Leixoes where he spent six months before moving to Vitoria Guimaraes.
Leverkusen snapped up the defender from Vitoria Guimaraes for a sizable fee in January last year, which could rise even further. The German side were impressed by his ball-playing skills at such a young age. He is now one of the first names on the team sheet, missing only a few games over the season.
It was earlier reported that Arsenal were leading the race to sign Tapsoba. However, their league standing has dented any such hopes. Tapsoba is said to prefer a move to either Chelsea or United. But both sides might wait for another season before going after him. The 22-year-old also has a mammoth £51m release clause in his contract.
As of now, Chelsea are not prioritizing a deal for Tapsoba. However, they may yet do so if they cannot get their hands on their primary target. It wouldn’t be entirely bad to delay a move for Tapsoba. He still has some time to develop into a more well-rounded defender. Nonetheless, Chelsea should keep an eye out on whether their rivals are going after him.
