Speaking to ITV Sport (h/t Football.london), England manager Gareth Southgate has issued an update on the prospects of Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell for the game against Germany.
England square off against old foes Germany in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Euro 2020 at the Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Three Lions, though, are staring at the prospect of being without both Mount and Chilwell for the contest against Joachim Low’s side.
Mount and Chilwell missed England’s most recent game against the Czech Republic after they were forced to self-isolate for coming in contact with Billy Gilmour who tested positive for coronavirus. The pair’s quarantine period ends on Monday night, a day before the game, leading to concerns if they will be available for the contest.
Southgate, addressing the media ahead of the game between England and Germany, issued an update on both Mount and Chilwell.
“Both of them have been doing training in small groups, away from the main group so they have been able to keep up their match fitness. In terms of team selection and involvement against Germany, their quarantine ends at midnight the day before the game.
“Their involvement in the game will not only be from a physical perspective, but a psychological one too as they have been in a room on their own for a long period of time. Therefore we have to consider this too before picking the squad ahead of the Germany game.”
Mount has grown into a crucial player for England under Southgate while Chilwell, too, had been a regular fixture at left-back until the resurgence of Luke Shaw recently. Nonetheless, having the duo available for selection would be a huge boost for the Three Lions. However, it seems like a late decision will be made on their involvement.
