According to transfer news from Metro, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud could still be heading to AC Milan after his new contract, as he has admitted the same. The Blues recently extended his deal by one more season with his previous deal set to end this month.
Giroud has been with Chelsea since January 2018, having signed from rivals Arsenal. While he hasn’t always been a regular in the starting XI, the French international has made vital contributions to the team’s cause at every step of the way, winning the FA Cup, the Europa League and the Champions League.
At the end of the season though, it was believed that Giroud would be on his way out, with his contract expiring. However, the Blues made a major U-turn by extending his contract by another year. His new deal will keep him at the club for another season.
Despite the extension, it’s not certain that the World Cup winner will be remaining at Chelsea. Prior to the extension, he was set on a move to AC Milan, having expressed his admiration for the likes of Milan legends Marco van Basten and Andriy Shevchenko.
“It’s fair to remember that I liked [Milan legends] Marco van Basten and Andriy Shevchenko. Milan are a big club and one of the great teams in Europe. But, today, I will not talk about my future at the club because I am focused on the France team and the Euros, which is fast approaching.”
At this point, it seems like extending Giroud’s stay at the club could be to get some sort of transfer fee for the player. It’s not that he is an indispensable asset to the side. However, Chelsea will now have to go after another striker in the transfer window just to make sure they are not short on numbers.
