Norwich City the frontrunners to sign Chelsea ace Billy Gilmour on loan

According to the Eastern Daily Press, newly-promoted Premier League outfit, Norwich City are leading the race to sign Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour on loan this summer.

Gilmour has been with Chelsea since the summer of 2017 when he made the switch from boyhood club Rangers. The young midfielder got his big break in the senior team during the 2019/20 season under Frank Lampard and he impressed heavily.

Indeed, Gilmour went on to win the Man of the Match award on his full debut in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, while he also repeated the feat with the Scotland national team in the UEFA Euro 2020 against England. (h/t The Sun)

Gilmour, to date, has featured just 22 times for Chelsea, given the competition for places in the starting XI. Considering that he is at an age when he needs to play regularly, the 20-year-old could benefit from going out on loan in the upcoming season. This has resulted in interest from Norwich City, Leeds United as well as Wolves, as per the report.

However, it is believed that Norwich, who are back into the top-flight after winning promotion, are said to be leading the other two PL clubs for his signing. The progress made by Tottenham loanee Oliver Skipp at Carrow Road last term, coupled with Daniel Farke’s track record with youngsters and the style of football that Norwich play have stacked the odds in their favour. But, they could potentially face a tougher competition from Gilmour’s former club Rangers. The midfielder is open to a return to Ibrox, due to the appeal of playing under Steven Gerrard. (h/t EDP)

Gilmour tested positive for coronavirus after the game against England and is currently in isolation. Any call on his future will be taken once he returns to the club for the pre-season.
