According to Metro, Jermaine Jenas has backed Chelsea to complete a transfer for Erling Haaland. With the likes of PSG, Barcelona and both Manchester clubs interested, the former England midfielder believes that Chelsea are the club that can actually get Haaland.
The Blues have shown tremendous interest in the player along with the rest of the elite European clubs, meaning that they will have to stump up heavy cash to land him. The Norwegian is arguably the hottest prospect in the world right now and has impressed heavily at Borussia Dortmund. Europe’s biggest clubs are now circling around him.
He does have a release clause that gets activated in the summer of 2022 but a host of clubs want a deal this year itself, none more than Chelsea, who have a striker problem on their hands. Timo Werner has struggled to find goals. Tammy Abraham cannot seem to get a game and Giroud is on the wrong side of 30.
Now, former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas has backed Chelsea among all the interested clubs to go ahead and sign Haaland.
‘Chelsea are the only football club that could get Erling Haaland tomorrow. That is how their model works. The Haaland deal is very complicated. There are a lot of payments, the dad, the agent, then you have to get the top fee to get him out from Borussia Dortmund this year.
‘If you wait a year you get him for significantly less than you would now. But you are in a competitive market where it will drag the price higher. Chelsea can pay the wages. You can easily see Roman Abramovich turning to Thomas Tuchel and going, “Listen, here is £200m, go and get what you want”.’
It’s not hard to guess why Jenas has backed Chelsea to sign the talented goalscorer. Chelsea won the Champions League recently. Haaland has shown that he can do it at such a young age. Chelsea will be confident that they can get their man even if it is at a record deal.
