“Forever our cult hero”: Fans react as veteran star wins Chelsea Goal of the Season

Fans react as Olivier Giroud wins Chelsea Goal of the Season

As confirmed by the club’s official Twitter handle, Olivier Giroud won the Chelsea Goal of the Season award. The veteran striker’s bicycle kick against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 stage was adjudged the winner ahead of Kai Havertz’ goal in the final.

The veteran Frenchman’s superb effort was enough to give Chelsea the edge over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16. Marcos Alonso’s cross was met by Mason Mount who did not seem to control it that well.

However, Mario Hermoso’s scuffed clearance popped the ball near Giroud at a decent height which he dispatched with a stunning overhead kick. Jan Oblak could do little to stop it. Although it was initially ruled offside, VAR corrected it and the goal stood.

Giroud’s goal was up against Kai Havertz’ goal against Man City in the final. Fans voted for the former as the veteran striker continues to defy age and make valuable contributions to the team.
