According to transfer news from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (h/t Football Italia), Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has reached an agreement with Serie A giants AC Milan over a summer move.
Giroud has been with Chelsea since January 2018, having completed a transfer from London rivals Arsenal. The Frenchman has been a key contributor to the Blues’ FA Cup, Europa League and the Champions League triumphs, even though he may not have been a regular in the lineup all the time.
At 34, the Frenchman has continued to score goals whenever called upon, although he has fallen behind the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in the pecking order at Chelsea.
Giroud’s contract with the club was set to expire later this month. However, the club has triggered a one-year extension option, keeping hold of him for another year. The Frenchman, though, seems to have his heart set on a switch away from the Bridge.
Indeed, as per the report, Giroud is keen on signing for AC Milan this summer and has already agreed terms over a two-year deal worth €4m per season to move to the San Siro. However, he must now secure a release from his contract with Chelsea as Milan can only sign him on a free transfer and cannot pay any fee.
The report also mentions that Chelsea would be open to letting Giroud leave on a free transfer, as long as it is abroad. So, there could be a real possibility that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner ends up swapping Stamford Bridge for San Siro before the next season kicks off.
