Chelsea star explains the pressure of trying to be the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’

Chelsea star Kai Havertz claims supporters expect him to be the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea star Kai Havertz claims that supporters expect him to be the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’. The German spoke about the pressure he has at Chelsea and how different it is from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Blues paid a fortune to get Havertz to London in the summer. However, an early bout of Covid-19 did little to help his adjustment to the side. Even when he was fit, he looked off the pace and was facing difficulties.

It was only after Thomas Tuchel pushed Havertz to play in a false-nine role that he started to deliver. Only after that did we see the glimpses of his best form that prompted Chelsea to shell out the big bucks. Havertz wrote his name into Chelsea folklore when he scored the all-important goal in the Champions League final.

However, Havertz felt that supporters would now make unfair comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese also joined the Premier League with Manchester United early in his career before becoming a star.

‘People expect you to be the new Cristiano Ronaldo. But it won’t be that fast, everything is new and I really didn’t play my best football at the beginning. I felt a completely different pressure than before in Leverkusen.’

It is obviously a bit too premature to be making such comparisons given the career Ronaldo has had so far. Nonetheless, comparisons with one of the game’s greats speak about the volumes of faith fans have in Havertz. The German though will get a chance to square off against the legendary Portuguese when Germany take on Portugal in the Euros later in the month.
