Transfer News: Chelsea set to axe 10 players in massive overhaul despite UCL glory
According to transfer news from The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea are looking to let go of 10 players in a massive clearout. The Blues are looking to offload a lot of fringe players as well as a few who are still involved with the first-team.
It has been a massive 10 days for the Blues. First, they secured top four in the Premier League in the last gameweek (albeit with a bit of help from Spurs). Then came the holy grail with the Champions League win over Man City to hand them the title. It was a comprehensive performance as Chelsea added their name to the winners’ list for a second time.
However, work has already begun for next season as the side want to strengthen in the summer with some transfers. While there have been various links to players such as Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi and Niklas Sule, Chelsea are actually looking to reduce the squad size with some departures.
It has been reported that Chelsea are all set to sanction the exit of 10 players from their squad. Fikayo Tomori is set to be signed by AC Milan on a permanent deal. Another player who could move there is Olivier Giroud, whose contract ends in the summer.
Two significant departures could be those of Tammy Abraham and Kurt Zouma. While Abraham has been on the fringes for a while, Zouma’s name comes as a surprise. It has been said that he does not fit Thomas Tuchel’s style of play.
A host of players who are out on loan are also set to face the axe. Davide Zappacosta, Ross Barkley, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and Michy Batshuayi could all be shown the exit door too. Another name who has not featured under Tuchel, Emerson could also be on his way out.

It will be a big summer for Chelsea, no doubt. There are bound to be new players coming in through the door but Chelsea will need to lighten their squad. They have far too many names on their books and offloading them will not only get them some cash but also ease the wage bill.
