According to transfer news from Daily Star, Chelsea are interested in signing Palmeiras defender Gustavo Gomez. Chelsea are looking to add a name to their defensive ranks and have identified the 28-year-old Paraguayan as an option.
A youth product of Club Libertad, Gustavo Gomez spent two years in their senior side before moving to Atletico Lanus in 2014. Two more seasons there and then he made the move to Europe with AC Milan.
However, he could only muster up 20 appearances for the Italian giants over two seasons. He then moved to Palmeiras on loan in 2018. It’s only there that Gomez started to get a regular run of games. His loan deal was made permanent in 2020. So far, he has made 116 appearances for the Brazilian side, scoring 14 goals as well.
With Fikayo Tomori linked with Chelsea exit, the club are looking to add to their defensive contingent. Gomez has carved out a good mane for himself in Brazil and is also an experienced international with Paraguay. The Blues see him as a reliable option to replace the outgoing Tomori.
Not much has been known about the South American given his below-par stint in Europe with AC Milan. However, he is a solid centre-back who comes with a huge goal threat as his stats may suggest. It does represent a gamble to go after Gomez and it will be interesting to see how much of an interest the Blues hold.
