Chelsea Fans react as Andreas Christensen stars for Denmark vs Russia and dedicates goal to Christian Eriksen
Monday saw a hugely important match for Denmark as they aimed for qualification in the UEFA Euros group stages, and Chelsea star Andreas Christensen stepped up to the plate. (h/t Chelsea official website)
The Danes needed a win to have even the slightest chance at qualifying, and a big win would have helped considered they had lost their opening two group games.
Denmark dominated proceedings. Mikkel Damsgaard scored the opening goal in the 38th minute before Yussuf Poulsen doubled the lead around the hour mark.
The Russians had a chance at a comeback when Artem Dzyuba slotted in a 70th minute penalty, but it was not to be. Chelsea centre-back and Denmark’s No.6, Christensen, blasted in a long-ranger to make it 3-1 just 10 minutes from time.

An 82nd-minute strike from Joakim Mehle sealed the 4-1 scoreline as Denmark qualified as the 2nd-placed team behind Belgium. Finland finished third while the Russians were eliminated.
Another classy gesture that fans around the world noted was Christensen’s celebration. The defender put up ’10’, the jersey number of the Inter Milan playmaker in his national team.
The 25-year-old was awarded the ‘Star of the Match’ after the game as his solid defensive performance ensured the Russians were kept at bay. Their opponents only managed a single goal, that too from the penalty spot.
Christensen has seen a steady rise in his stature especially since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival. He was also solid in this year’s UEFA Champions League where he kept a clean sheet after replacing the injured Thiago Silva.
