Belfast the venue for UEFA Super Cup between Chelsea and Villarreal
According to news from Sky Sports, Chelsea will play the UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal in Belfast. It was earlier rumoured that the one-off game would be held in Istanbul after missing out on the Champions League final.
Chelsea are on cloud nine after their Champions League triumph over Manchester City on 29th May. A Kai Havertz goal was all it took to separate both sides as Chelsea lifted the trophy after nine years. The final was not without its share of problems.
The Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, was initially scheduled to host the final on 29th May. But things went awry since the UK government decided to add Turkey to the red list. Nonetheless, a solution was found, with the Portuguese FA being open to host the final. The final was held at the Estadio do Dragao.
Due to Istanbul missing the Champions League final for two seasons in a row, it was speculated that UEFA would allow the Super Cup game to be played there. However, Irish FA CEO Patrick Nelson confirmed that the game would be played in Belfast.
“We have kept in close contact with our partners at UEFA on the matter and following these discussions we are delighted that they have confirmed that the game will stay in Belfast.”
