Tuchel makes interesting admission after Chelsea qualify for Champions League despite Villa defeat

Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea were lucky to secure Champions League

According to The Guardian, Thomas Tuchel admitted that Chelsea were lucky to secure Champions League football for next season. The Blues managed to keep their place in the top-four despite a loss on the final day as Leicester lost their game.

Chelsea might just have pulled off a close one in terms of the top-four race. It was not their result that guaranteed them the spot but Leicester’s loss. Tottenham came to the aid of their London rivals as they dispatched Leicester to make sure Chelsea’s loss against Aston Villa would not matter much.

At times it looked like Chelsea were almost out of the race when Leicester led the game on two occasions. Chelsea were not helped by going down to Villa twice. Yet, as the final whistle blew, it would be Chelsea who would be going through to next season’s Champions League.

Thomas Tuchel was a relieved man as he admitted that Chelsea were lucky to scrape through to the Champions League.

“We are lucky that Tottenham finished the job for us. We came to win and to put any doubts to the side but it was not possible. I knew maybe three or four minutes before our game was over because the game at Leicester was over a bit earlier.”
