Transfer News: Thiago Silva to remain at Chelsea next season as contract clause ‘will be triggered’
According to Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will make sure that Thiago Silva stays at the club next season.
The Brazilian defender was signed by Frank Lampard as a free agent last summer. His contract was just for a single year but included an option within it to extend it for another season.
As it turns out, the club ‘will’ trigger it and Silva will be staying at Stamford Bridge for at least another season. He has played a big role ever since he came into the Chelsea side. (h/t Fabrizio Romano)
The 37-year-old’s leadership, experience, and skills have hugely benefited Chelsea in their run to the UCL trophy. It wasn’t a fitting end to his season, however, as he limped off in the first half of the UCL final against Manchester City.
Tying down Silva for another season
The Blues, nevertheless, went on to win the game and Silva celebrated with his teammates into the night. It would be a relief for Chelsea fans to know that Silva limping off the pitch will not be the last memory they have of him on the football pitch.
As for Thomas Tuchel, Romano added that the club will also open negotiations with him. The German gaffer was brought in for a year and a half when he replaced Frank Lampard in January.
And since then, he has totally turned the team around, taking them to an FA Cup final, a top 4 finish, and Champions League glory. Chelsea have a solid team to build upon next season and would look to go back-to-back in Europe as well as aim for the league.
