Report: Chelsea suffer blow in pursuit of prolific Serie A superstar

Transfer News: Chelsea dealt major blow in Romelu Lukaku pursuit

According to transfer news from the Express, Chelsea have suffered a blow in their pursuit to sign former striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan in the summer.

Lukaku initially signed for Chelsea from RSC Anderlecht in 2011 but never really got a chance to prove his worth at the Bridge. After loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Everton, he joined the latter permanently before going to enjoy a productive stint with Manchester United.

Lukaku made the switch to Inter Milan in the summer of 2019 and has since taken his game to a whole new level. The Belgian international was one of the major driving forces as the Nerazzurri went on to win their first Serie A title in eleven years. He has a return of 29 goals and 10 assists in 43 games in all competitions this term.

Lukaku’s exploits in Italy have seen him end up back on Chelsea’s radar with the club keen on signing a new striker. While Harry Kane is also an option that the Blues are looking at, Tottenham are unlikely to do business with the Blues. Erling Haaland, meanwhile, is likely to stay put at Borussia Dortmund as well, leading to the interest in Lukaku. (h/t Express)

Inter Milan were in a difficult position financially which could have led to them selling some of their top stars, including Lukaku this summer. However, that seems to have changed now as the Italian champions have agreed a deal with US based financial company Oaktree Capital, to bring in £263m, which will help stabilise their finances.

This, in turn, means, Inter now do not have to sell their best players, thus handing Chelsea a blow in the pursuit of Lukaku.

A transfer to bring Lukaku back to Chelsea, seems to have hit a snag now. With Haaland and Kane still on the radars, it remains to be seen who the club is able to bring in.
