According to transfer news from Football Orange, Chelsea have been linked with a move for Wout Weghorst. The tall, Dutch striker has attracted the attention of clubs with his prolific displays for VfL Wolfsburg.
The 28-year-old came through the youth ranks at Dutch club DETO and had spells at Willem II, FC Emmen, Heracles Almelo before he joined AZ Alkmaar in 2016. In 86 appearances for the club over two years, he scored 45 goals, before signing for Wolfsburg in 2018.
Since joining the Bundesliga outfit, the Dutch forward has continued to score at an impressive rate. Over the last two seasons, has averaged 20 goals and has bagged 20 in the ongoing Bundesliga season as well.
Weghorst’s displays haven’t been in vain. The 6ft 4in striker is a real presence in the field and is an ideal target man for any decent crosses coming in. Unfortunately something that none of the Chelsea strikers can say about themselves. Hence it’s no surprise to see the club registering their interest in the Dutch striker. However, they are not the only club after him with Borussia Dortmund also looking to go after him.
Quite how a team has three strikers at their disposal and their best bet is an attacking midfielder playing as a false nine is beyond reason. Yet that remains the case as Kai Havertz looks to be the lone bright spot in the frontline.
At this point, a punt on Weghorst may be a bit of a risky might seem risky given how the Werner transfer turned out. However, Weghorst is a different type of striker altogether and is more of a classic No.9 that Chelsea have used in the past.
