According to transfer news from TRANSFERmarketWEB, struggling Chelsea forward Timo Werner is a target for Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side are also keen on a swap deal that would see Saul Niguez go the other way.
Timo Werner might have scored one of the most important goals for Chelsea this season when he headed home into an empty net. That is his only goal from open play in the Champions League this season so far. Despite only joining the club this season, he has failed to match his previously high standards.
It has been an all too familiar sight of Werner missing chance after chance. The German striker missed another glorious opportunity to get an important away goal against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Prior to this, Werner squandered an easy chance in the West Ham game.
Despite that, Werner’s reputation as a striker appears not to have diminished as Atletico Madrid are planning to bring him in through a swap deal. The swap would see Spanish midfielder Saul Niguez move to Stamford Bridge.
While letting go of Werner after just one season might seem premature, one can’t help but look at the upsides of this deal. Saul is a world-class midfielder to get in return for Werner who is not having the best of times in front of goal. Plus, Chelsea are already looking at signing a new striker for next season thereby filling the numbers in attack.
