Thomas Tuchel says there is ‘room for improvement’ for Chelsea’s derby hero

Thomas Tuchel praises Kai Havertz after two goals vs Fulham but says there is still room for improvement

Talking in an interview (h/t football.london) after Chelsea won on Saturday, Thomas Tuchel stated that Kai Havertz still has room for improvement after his two goals against Fulham in the London derby.

The German wore his finishing boots against Fulham as his brace saw Chelsea secure all three points. He was at the end of two glorious assists, first from Mason Mount, and then from Timo Werner, as he thrived playing up front.

This performance comes after Havertz got a goal and an assist playing against Crystal Palace in a 4-1 win in April. And asked if he was happy with Havertz after the match, Tuchel’s first words about the 21-year-old were that he could still improve further.

Kai Havertz (L) and Timo Werner (R) have shown improvements under Tuchel.

“Yes and still there is room for improvement but for today I am very happy. Of course, he was decisive, he was involved with Timo as a double striker and with Mason and Hakim as the four offensive guys, always involved in dangerous attacks and situations.”

Havertz against Madrid?

But Tuchel praised Havertz’s commitment to the cause despite being left out of the starting XI against Real Madrid last week. And the gaffer is glad that his player can give him a selection ‘headache’ for the 2nd leg against Madrid on Wednesday.

“…he took his chance, he showed up, this is what we need all the time and especially in situations like this, you need guys who are fully committed… If you have five minutes, fifteen minutes or a whole game, whatever it is, show that you are ready and give me a headache for the next game.”

Kai Havertz scored twice against Fulham to seal a 2-0 win and would hope his goals are enough to earn him a start against Real Madrid. (GETTY Images)

Chelsea tightened their hold on 4th position after this important victory. The Blues are in a commanding position before the last 4 games of the season as they look to qualify for next season’s UEEFA Champions League.

But they can still make the cut even if they don’t finish in the top 4. That is if they can see off the Spanish giants in the second leg of their semi-final on Wednesday and go on to win the final against either PSG or Manchester City in Istanbul.
