Report: Chelsea transfer target offered £84k-a-week contract by Real Madrid

Real Madrid offer £84,000-a-week deal to Chelsea-linked Lucas Vazquez

According to Spanish publication AS (h/t Daily Mail), La Liga champions Real Madrid have offered winger Lucas Vazquez a new contract in order to stave off interest from Chelsea, as well as Manchester United.

Vazquez, 29, is a product of the Real Madrid youth academy and has grown into a handy squad player since breaking into the first-team setup in 2015. This season, however, the Spanish winger has stepped up a great deal, putting in highly impressive performances on the wing as well as slotting in at right-back in the absence of Dani Carvajal.

Currently out with an injury, Vazquez is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season as his contract with Real Madrid expires in a month. This has sparked a flurry of interest in his services from a host of clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United.

An enticing opportunity

For Chelsea, the interest in Vazquez makes a great deal of sense as he has plenty of experience at the highest level and has shown that he can play in a deeper role on the flanks this season. That would make him an ideal fit as the right-sided wing-back in Thomas Tuchel’s system.

Given that Reece James has little in the way of competition apart from Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is more suited to an attacking role, signing someone like Vazquez, that too on a free transfer would certainly be of appeal to the Blues.

However, Real Madrid have made a late attempt to try and hold on to the Spanish international by offering him a new contract. The deal would see his wages rise from £60,000-a-week to £84,000 per week, which would be a significant increase. (h/t Daily Mail)

Apart from Chelsea, Vazquez has also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United, PSG, Bayern Munich as well as Everton. But, Real Madrid’s contract offer does change the complexion of the transfer chase.
