22-year-old star backed to become the ‘symbol of Chelsea’ and emulate club legend John Terry

Mason Mount backed to become the ‘symbol of Chelsea’ like John Terry

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Mason Mount to emulate John terry and become the symbol of Chelsea over the next decade.

Mount has been with the Blues’ academy since age six but has had to bide his time to make his way into the first-team. After loan spells away at Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County, the attacking midfielder got his big break in the 2019/20 campaign under Frank Lampard and there has been no looking back since.

Earlier this week, Mount went on to make his 100th appearance for Chelsea in the 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, showing how important of a player he has become for the club in such a short time.

There had been critics who had accused ex-manager Lampard of favouritism towards Mount. But the Englishman has proven himself to be an indispensable asset under Thomas Tuchel as well while he is also a mainstay in the national team already, just aged 22.

And Carragher has now claimed that Mount can be the symbol of Chelsea, the flag-bearer for the academy products for the next decade or so like John Terry was in the past.

“This kid can be the symbol of Chelsea for the next 10 years in the same way as John Terry in his prime.”

Carragher then went on to compare the breakthrough of Mount with that of Manchester City’s Phil Foden, drawing parallels to Lampard and Steven Gerrard. At the same time, he also insisted that the duo will be the top contenders for the Young Player of the Year award.

“Seeing Mount and Foden emerge at the same time reminds me of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard’s breakthrough.”

More Chelsea News:

There is no denying that Mount has come a long way since making his breakthrough last season – 100 appearances with 16 goals and 13 assists. Not to mention the way he contributes to the team with his all-round play. If he continues to develop at this rate, only sky is the limit for the 22-year-old.
