In what was going to be a dress rehearsal for the UEFA Champions League final later this month, Chelsea squared off against Manchester City at the Etihad and managed to keep the soon-to-be Premier League champions at bay for most of the first half.
However, Raheem Sterling found the back of the net just before half-time to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead. And it could have been 2-0 soon after but Sergio Aguero missed from the penalty spot as the break arrived. Post the interval, Chelsea came out stronger and put pressure on City, which eventually paid off in the 62nd minute as Hakim Ziyech found the back of the net to equalise.
The Blues put the ball into the back of the net twice after but both Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi had strayed offside, leading to the strikes not standing. But, into the stoppage time, there was late drama as Marcos Alonso hit home the winning goal to bag all three points for the Blues.
The result sees Chelsea now move into the third place in the Premier League table with Leicester City dropping points on Friday night against Newcastle United. Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile has defeated Pep Guardiola twice in the space of a month now, having first eliminated City from the FA Cup semi-finals.
