Speaking to TalkSPORT (h/t Mirror), ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor called Timo Werner ‘erratic’ and urged Chelsea to sign an elite striker in the summer to replace him.
Werner became the first player since Eden Hazard to get double figures for goals and assists in a single season for Chelsea. But despite that, his scoring rate is not that of the best strikers in the league.
Despite showing signs of improvement under new manager Thomas Tuchel, Werner has just 6 league goals this season. In fact, he has netted just twice in his last 25 Premier League games for the Blues. (h/t Transfermarkt)
That is not what Chelsea would have expected of him when they signed the German striker from RB Leipzig last summer. But Tuchel continues to stick with the 25-year-old and start him ahead of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.
However, after Chelsea’s latest FA Cup final defeat against Leicester City where Werner failed to make any impact, Agbonlahor thinks that it’s time for Tuchel to sign a quality forward as a replacement.
“He seems a bit too erratic and Chelsea, with their history with the likes of Didier Drogba and the strikers they’ve had in the past. They need to go out and buy a big, big striker who can score goals and turn up in the big games.”
Agbonlahor is not entirely wrong here. Chelsea have had a history of big-game strikers, especially Drogba, who came up trumps on occasions that mattered. But it’s also harsh to get the jury out on Werner after just one season in England.
Chelsea are interested in the likes of Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku, but it remains to be seen if Tuchel is ready to give up on Werner so soon.
