A report by the Daily Star Sport (h/t Mirror) mentions that Everton are planning an audacious swoop for Manchester City striker and Chelsea transfer target, Sergio Aguero.
The Argentine striker’s contract expires this summer and will leave the club as a free agent. The 32-year-old is one of the greatest goal-scorers the league has ever seen and there is no surprise that top clubs are circling him already.
Chelsea, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, and Inter Milan are all interested in signing the former Atletico Madrid striker. But now, The Toffees’ name is also added to the mix. (h/t Mirror)
Aguero is on a massive £240,000-a-week wage package which the Merseysiders cannot meet. However, the report says that the club has informed Aguero’s advisors that they will ‘bridge the gap’ by paying a hefty signing-on fee.
Speaking in a statement when the news of his release was made official, Aguero highlighted that he wants to keep playing at a high level.
“Then [after this season], a new stage with new challenges will begin, and I am fully ready to face them with the same passion and professionalism that I have always dedicated to continue competing at the highest level.”
The Blues signed Timo Werner last summer but he is yet to hit his best goal-scoring form. As for Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham, the duo’s future remains up in the air.
In such a situation, signing an experienced striker like Aguero can do wonders. Edinson Cavani’s season at Manchester United should offer fans some hope that world-class strikers can continue to be deadly even if their best years are behind them.
