A report by The Guardian states that Thomas Tuchel ‘is close’ to signing a new contract with Chelsea after his side won the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday night.
The German manager was signed on an 18-month deal earlier this season. And ever since he has replaced Frank Lampard, the club has had a complete turnaround in their fortunes.
The report mentions that the new contract would be until the summer of 2023, with an option of extending it by another year. Tuchel completely outclassed Pep Guardiola this weekend.
Chelsea were deserved winners on the night after Kai Havertz’s goal in the 42nd minute was enough to land the club only its second-ever Champions League trophy. And after the game, Tuchel was asked about his contract situation. (h/t football.london)
“I’m not even 100 per cent sure but maybe I have a new contract now with that win! My manager said something about that but I don’t know so let’s see.”
The German manager seemed eager to extend his stay at the club. He revealed that the post-UCL celebrations on the pitch was the first time he had ever met Roman Abramovich.
“I spoke to the owner right now on the pitch, it was the best moment for a first meeting, or the worst because from now on it can only get worse. We will speak tomorrow, we will speak later. I am looking forward to this. I can assure him that I will stay hungry. That I want the next title. That I feel absolutely happy as a part of a really ambitious club, a strong group that suits my beliefs, my passion about football in the moment perfectly, so my desire is to go for more victories.”
It’s amazing to think that Tuchel hasn’t even been here full season. He had to undertake a team built by another manager and guided them to two cup finals and a top 4 finish.
So fans can be excited thinking about what Tuchel could achieve once he has a couple of transfer windows behind him and a full season in-charge of the club.
