According to Italian transfer expert and journalist, Fabrizio Romano (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea are set to offer a new contract to star midfielder N’Golo Kante in the coming weeks.
Ever since signing for Chelsea from Leicester City in 2016, Kante has been a permanent fixture in the team’s midfield. And even this season, he was a star performer throughout.
It was the UEFA Champions League where he really stepped up to the fore. That culminated in a Man of the Match performance in the final against Manchester City on Saturday.
His current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and there is no doubt that the Blues fans want the French international to stay well beyond that.
Speaking after the match to RMC Sport (h/t Daily Star), Kante explained how the primary achievement for him is the team trophy, not the MOTM award.
“The Man of the Match award is secondary. The main thing is the work of the whole group. It is pride and joy. We fought to qualify for the final. Today, we have suffered, we have the reward.”
Another individual award that Kante is being touted for is the Ballon d’Or. But Chelsea’s humble midfielder doused the fire and simply said that his focus now will shift to winning the UEFA Euros with France in the summer.
“No, for the moment we are savouring the Champions League, the Euros are soon, I will join the France team and I hope to win that as well.”
His importance to the side is unquestionable. In Kante, Thomas Tuchel has a tireless midfielder who gives it his all for the team and leaves nothing on the pitch. Let’s hope that the club rewards him as such and the 30-year-old stays at Chelsea for a long, long time.
The 22-year-old made a top class performance and marked an assist in Chelsea's 3-0 win against West Ham.
