Ross Barkley of Chelsea is among six players on the transfer list.

Chelsea Transfer News: Newcastle interested in Ross Barkley

According to transfer news from The Athletic (subscription required), Newcastle are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley. Newcastle are looking at cut-price options for next season and they could try to get Barkley on loan if Chelsea allow it.

Barkley signed for the Villans on a season-long loan deal last summer following the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. The England international made a blazing start to life at Villa Park, forming a dangerous tandem with Jack Grealish.

However, a hamstring injury he sustained in November led to a significant spell on the sidelines, post which Barkley has struggled to hit the heights of the early periods of the season. Along with that, manager Dean Smith somewhat ruled out a permanent move for the player.

With the player set to return to Chelsea, Newcastle could offer him a way out again. The Magpies are expected to add to their side for next season but funds might not be that abundant. That could lead them to go after loan deals and Barkley is among the names they could go for. Other names being considered are Lewis O’Brien, Conor Gallagher and Olivier Ntcham.

It looks very unlikely that Barkley will break into the side under Tuchel. There are already more than enough attacking players in the side. Letting him out on loan again could be the best option at this point with Newcastle showing interest.
