Things have been feisty between Leicester City and Chelsea in the past few weeks and it reached a boiling point on Sunday with the two clubs in the race for a top four for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Blues lost in the FA Cup final to the Foxes but beat them in the Premier League fixture the following week. That match saw a 20-man brawl break out which summed up the club’s feelings towards each other recently.
Nevertheless, it was Tuchel & co. who had the last laugh despite losing 2-1 to Aston Villa. The Blues came into the last gameweek knowing that failure to win against the Villans could mean a 5th-place finish.
And that’s what it looked like for the first hour or so, with the blues trailing Villa 2-0 and Leicester leading against Spurs by a 2-1 scoreline. A fluke goal from Bertrand Traore followed by a 52nd-minute penalty from Anwar El Ghazi meant Chelsea were going out of the top 4 as it stood.
Another Timo Werner goal was ruled out by VAR while Ben Chilwell scored a consolation goal in the 70th-minute. But as it turned out, Spurs came back to beat the Foxes 4-2, which meant the Blues finished 4th in the league.
Liverpool beat Palace to make it 26 points from their last 30 games as they finished 3rd. The Blues finished with 67 points while Leicester were 5th, one point behind this year’s UEFA Champions League finalists from London.
And Chelsea fans were understandably ecstatic at the results elsewhere, with a place in Europe gifted to them without even having to get a point in their game against Dean Smith’s men.
