According to transfer news from Mirror, Chelsea will fight Manchester United and PSG for the signing of Raphael Varane. Real Madrid are looking to raise funds via sales and the sale of Varane is expected to help them do so.
Varane has been a stalwart at the back for Real Madrid for almost a decade now and has won loads of trophies during his time at the club. However, the Frenchman is entering the final year of his contract with Los Blancos and is yet to commit his future to the Spanish club.
At a time when almost all clubs across Europe are facing a financial crunch due to the pandemic, Real Madrid have not been immune to it either. The Blancos are in a financial mess and that is why president Florentino Perez was spearheading the whole European Super League idea.
Nonetheless, with the ESL now out of the picture, Real might have to resort to player sales in a bid to raise cash for new arrivals. Varane is one such player who they hope can attract a good value of around €70m. It has been reported that Chelsea will be competing against the likes of Manchester United and PSG for his signature.
At 28 years of age, Varane fits the category of a prime world-class defender that Chelsea need. He is not only young for a centre-back but also comes with a winning mentality. It remains to be seen how Chelsea proceed in the race for his signature. Nonetheless, this would be one of the statement signings by the club.
