Thiago Silva mentions Frank Lampard after Chelsea beat Man City to life the UEFA Champions League
Speaking to RMC Sport (h/t Metro) after his team’s Champions League final triumph, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva thanked Frank Lampard for bringing him to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Thomas Tuchel has masterminded the club’s second Champions League win in history. But before he was sacked in January, Frank Lampard guided the blues to a top-place finish in their group.
This meant avoiding the tougher half of the draw, but that shouldn’t take away the German’s achievement after that. It was also the Englishman who brought Thiago Silva to the Bridge last summer.
The Brazilian centre-back, now 36, was a free agent and signing him was a big moment for Chelsea this season, for both the club and the player himself. And Silva made sure to pay his tributes to the former Blues’ boss.

“Without Lampard, I would not be here. I am very happy, and I hope he will be too. This is the most important moment in my career. I am truly very happy. We didn’t manage it with PSG [in last season’s final against Bayern Munich] but today I am very happy. I hope PSG do it too.”
It was not the match Silva would have envisaged for him personally as he was forced off with an injury in the first half. But Andreas Christensen, his replacement, put in a memorable showing.
Silva joined the club on a one-year-deal last summer which runs out in a few weeks’ time but there is a possibility of him extending it.

His experience and leadership have already come in handy for Chelsea multiple times, and with Tuchel wanting to gel together a team of youngsters, someone like the Brazilian should stay another season for what he will bring to the team on the pitch and inside the locker room.
