“Wait and see”: Forgotten Chelsea man opens up on future as contract nears expiry

Chelsea News: Marco van Ginkel waiting on contract decision from club as uncertain future looms

According to news outlet Daily Mail, forgotten Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has opened up on his future at the club, as he awaits a decision on his contract.

Van Ginkel signed for Chelsea from Vitesse Arnhem back in the summer of 2013 but has endured a rocky eight-year stint with the club. The Dutchman has spent the majority of his time with the Blues away on loan, having had stints with the likes of AC Milan, Stoke City and more recently PSV Eindhoven.

Injuries haven’t helped Van Ginkel’s causes either as he spent over a 1000 days out on the sidelines between the last couple of seasons due to a serious injury. Currently with PSV on another loan stint, the 28-year-old has played just ten times across all competitions.

His loan deal expires in a few weeks while his contract with Chelsea is also set to run out at the end of the season. And reflecting on what awaits next for him, Van Ginkel has claimed that he is waiting to see if the Blues decide to extend his deal by another year, with a decision expected next week.

“Chelsea must officially announce next week whether they will exercise the option.”

Van Ginkel does, however, acknowledge that the chances of that happening are slim but he will wait and see before deciding what’s next for him.

“I’ll wait and see then. The chance that I will play there is not very big. But if I play matches I am of value. If they can make a few million more, I don’t know how they stand.”

More Chelsea News:

A talented player that has fallen victim to injuries, Van Ginkel is unlikely to have a future at Chelsea. As things stand, Thomas Tuchel already has a plethora of options in midfield, not considering the ones out on loan. A separation, thus, could be in the best interest of both parties.

It, however, will be interesting to see if Chelsea decide to trigger the one-year extension option and sell him for a fee rather than losing the Dutchman on a free transfer.
