A report by Sky Sports states that Chelsea are one of the six Premier League clubs set for talks with English football’s top division next week as they wait to learn their punishment for the failed European Super League.
The Blues, along with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, formalized their desire earlier this year of forming a breakaway European Super League.
These 6 clubs constituted 50% of the total number of clubs involved in this venture. All the English member clubs quickly abandoned the idea after widespread criticism from fans and pundits.
And since then, Premier League has been considering dishing out a fine for the guilty clubs. Earlier this month, a proposal by the English top-flight mentioned a £15m fine per club and suspended points deduction.
The clubs are said to ‘vigorously’ oppose any such measures to deduct points. Apart from dishing out fines that could be exceeding £10m in total, another proposed punishment that could be handed out next week is a one-off £1m fine followed by 5% of next season’s TV revenue.
In total, the total pool of Premier League fines could exceed £40m. But of course, the real figure would only be known once Premier League reaches a final verdict; and that could take a while.
The talks, however, will take place before the UEFA Champions League final between the two clubs in question – Chelsea and City. The two clubs will be fighting for the biggest prize in club football on 29th May.
European Super League would have taken away the concept of relegation and promotion and replaced the UEFA Champions League for the member clubs. It is understandable why the governing bodies are keen to hand out some sort of punishment.
A repeat offence should be prevented because the principles and values of football shall not be challenged like this again.
