Thomas Tuchel has sent out the pledge that Chelsea will go to Istanbul to win the Champions League (h/t The Guardian). Chelsea’s 3-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid mean that they will encounter Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final.
It took effort from Chelsea but at times, it felt as if they could be punished for their complacency in front of goal. Not until Mason Mount rushed in to slam home the second goal did the match feel settled. Timo Werner did give the lead in the first half with a classic poacher’s goal.
Chelsea are well set to finish the season with two trophies this season, with the Champions League and FA Cup finals to negotiate. It is under Thomas Tuchel that they have shown a tremendous level of ability to win games against the toughest opposition and they will face nothing less than that in the Champions League final.
Thomas Tuchel pledged to go for the win in Istanbul with Chelsea where they will face Man City.
“It gives us a good feeling, it gives us self-confidence. We played that semi-final on the edge and we used it because Bayern Munich, with Manchester City, are the benchmark. We wanted to close the gap to Man City in the semi-final, which we did and we will need the same level of performance again. But it gave us belief for every game after that because it’s the highest level you can face.
“We have these huge challenges in Premier League. We came out of it very strongly, so we will arrive with confidence and a positive energy in Istanbul, hopefully with no injured players. We will arrive in Istanbul to win, not to be one of the participants.”
Chelsea can feel good about themselves after ousting one of the competition’s best performers in Real Madrid. Nonetheless, City will be no pushovers as they have shown this season. It promises to be an epic clash between Tuchel and Guardiola when they meet in Istanbul for the final showdown.
