UEFA could punish Chelsea and Real Madrid by disbanding their Champions League tie

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea and Real Madrid could face some punishment from UEFA as their Champions League tie could be in jeopardy. UEFA president Alexander Ceferin insisted that there is a small possibility that the semi-final tie between both clubs could be disbanded.

As the dust somewhat settles on the crumbles of the European Super League – a closed league of 12 elite European clubs to rival the Champions League and generate more revenue, the aftermath will be very interesting to see. Apart from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, all the other nine clubs have officially announced their withdrawal from the ESL.

Nonetheless, given how the clubs went ahead with the plan is bound to leave some repercussions. After all, they did go up against the wishes of the UEFA. Five out of the 12 clubs are still involved in UEFA’s competitions. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man City are in the semi-finals of the Champions League while Manchester United and Arsenal are in the same stage in the Europa League.

With several punishments being proposed for the clubs this season itself, Chelsea and Real Madrid could be the first clubs to get hit. Ceferin has climbed that there might be a small chance that the semi-final between Chelsea and Real Madrid could be scrapped.

ST PETERBURG, RUSSIA – JANUARY 19, 2017: UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin R talks to media after the launch of the logo for St Petersburg, one of 13 cities to host 2020 UEFA European Football Championship matches.

‘The key is that this season has already started, so broadcasters would come at us for damages if we don’t play the semi-finals. So, there’s a relatively small possibility that this match isn’t played next week. But, things could be a little different in the future.’

More Chelsea News:

Chelsea and Real could escape any punishments given that so much of the season has already been completed and as Ceferin said, the broadcasters would come at them if the ties aren’t played. However, sanctions could await all 12 clubs next season for what they tried to do.
