Thomas Tuchel delivers verdict on Chelsea match-winner vs West Ham

Thomas Tuchel insists Timo Werner needs to keep scoring goals for Chelsea after winner against West Ham United

Speaking in his post-match press conference (h/t Metro) after Chelsea won on Saturday, Thomas Tuchel insisted that Timo Werner ‘needs to keep scoring goals’ after his latest West Ham United heroics.

The German striker was on hand to convert a tasty cross from Ben Chilwell to send Chelsea 1-0 up at half-time. He later had a big chance to double his goal tally on the day, but the chance went to waste.

Werner was not left to rue his miss as the Blues managed to hold onto the scoreline. And this goal was particularly much-needed for the £47.5m summer signing, who had netted just once in his last 22 Premier League games before this.

He now has 6 goals in the Premier League and this goal was probably the most vital one, considering the possible implications. Liverpool slipped up against Newcastle United this weekend.

Back on the scoring trail

This gave Chelsea the chance to widen the gap to 4 points from the Premier League champions, which they gladly took. But Tuchel thinks that the onus is on Werner to make the most of his chances and to keep scoring goals now.

“I can’t do anything, he needs to keep scoring and catch the moment. He is quite often involved in our goals with fouls in the penalty area or assists. But nothing helps more than a decisive goal.”

The former PSG boss then addressed his thoughts on Werner’s miss and he said that the striker was probably tired in the latter stages of the game. Werner was subbed-ff for Tammy Abraham in the 87th minute.

“It was very, very nice that he could score. He could’ve had a second one and after that he lost a little bit of confidence and was a bit tired. A good performance and I’m happy because it was a big win.”

More Chelsea News:

The Blues now have Real Madrid to prepare for as they gear up for their trip to the Spanish capital this mid-week in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League tie, and Werner would hope that he can use this goal as a springboard for regaining his scoring touch.
