Chelsea boss Tuchel asks Timo Werner to keep his chin up as the striker missed a sitter vs Madrid
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel asked Timo Werner to remain positive despite him missing a peach of a goal against Real Madrid (h/t The Sun). Chelsea came away from Madrid with a vital away goal despite the draw. The tie is firmly poised for next week.
It was pouring at The Valdebebas as both Chelsea and Real Madrid cancelled each other out in a gritty display. However, Chelsea did look the brighter of the two sides and could have actually come away with more than a draw on another day.
In a game that started with Chelsea hurrying their Spanish opponents, they could have had the lead via Timo Werner. Nine minutes into the game, Werner found Christian Pulisic’s headed lob but could only manage to induce a superb save from Thibaut Courtois.
Not to take anything away from the save but it should have been 1-0 there as Werner was in point-blank range. It was clear that he shot too close to the keeper and someone of Courtois’ calibre is expected to save that.
Nonetheless, Thomas Tuchel refused to wallow much on the miss and asked Werner to remain positive.
“He missed a big one at West Ham and missed another one here that doesn’t help. But it also does not help to cry about it, or to regret it all the time. It is like this. There are millions of people who have harder things to deal with than chances you miss, so this is the good thing about sport.
Nobody cares tomorrow. We were sad and angry at the time. He is angry and maybe disappointed. Tomorrow he has a free day then he has to get his chin up. He is a professional guy, a top guy.”

While it is understandable that Tuchel is looking at the positives that Werner is slowly getting into goal-scoring positions, a tally of three goals in 2021 really does not help. He is missing absolute sitters and that may cost Chelsea. One can only hope he keeps his chin up and finishes these sort of chances in the future.
