Granovskaia earmarks 26-year-old German star to bolster the Chelsea backline

Transfer News: Chelsea could sign Matthias Ginter next season

According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea are looking to sign Matthias Ginter next season. Marina Granovskaia intends to bring the player to Stamford Bridge and could do so as the German defender wants to join a side playing in Europe next season.

The 26-year-old German international enjoyed an excellent season for Die Fohlen last time around. He played a crucial role as Gladbach finished in the top four and qualified for this season’s Champions League. We were linked with a move for the player earlier in the summer. However, he chose to stay at Gladbach.

Chelsea remain interested in Matthias Ginter

The 26-year-old has carried his good form into the new season as well. Having joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, Ginter has gone from strength to strength at Gladbach. A full German international, Ginter has made 37 appearances for the national side. He has scored two goals during this time.

Chelsea and Tuchel are said to be after a new centre-back as they look to refresh their defensive options for next season. The club have relied on the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma this season.

Matthias Ginter has emerged as a target for Chelsea

Fikayo Tomori was sent out on loan to AC Milan after being deprived of opportunities. It is understandable that Chelsea would want to go for another solid defender, with Tuchel reverting to a three-man defence. Add to that, Silva and Azpilicueta are ageing and will need to be replaced soon.

Hence, moving for Ginter might not be an entirely bad option, especially with the conditions he has set for joining the club. Chelsea are close to sealing a place in the top four and even if they miss out, Europa League is certain. The club should look to revisit their interest in the German as he can be a useful addition to our defensive contingent.
