According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea are all set to renew their interest in Dries Mertens. London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are after the striker and Chelsea are also said to revive their interest in the Napoli man after pursuing him in 2020.
The 33-year-old Belgian was out of contract last season and it was expected that he would make the move to the Premier League. Frank Lampard who was the manager then, was determined to add to his attacking resources and went after Mertens. However, Mertens decided to extend his stay with the Italian club.
He wanted to become Napoli’s all-time top-scorer ahead of Diego Maradona and he did accomplish the same. However, now it has been reported that Napoli are looking to offload the player due to his wages and cost-cutting measures.
It finally looks as though Mertens could be heading to the Premier League next season as the London heavyweights contemplate a move for him.
Mikel Arteta could use some attacking boost while Spurs are making contingency plans for Kane’s probable departure. For Chelsea, he could be a replacement for Giroud, who could leave the club after his deal expires.
Mertens is an experienced forward capable of scoring goals at a prolific rate. Now that is something missing at Chelsea.
The Blues need to capitalise on this stance from Napoli and finally go after Mertens next season. They might not get a better chance to do so.
