According to Metro, Timo Werner feels that The tactics used by Thomas Tuchel are important and suited to Chelsea. The striker thought that the Blues’ impeccable defensive record is due to the German manager’s tactics.
It is now close to six months since the club let go of Frank Lampard. Chelsea were drifting in ninth place in the league and something had to be done. In came Thomas Tuchel and set about his repair job. What followed can only be termed as a string of defensive masterclasses in each game barring one.
In 13 league games, Chelsea have only let in 8 goals, 5 of which were conceded in the West Brom game itself due to playing with 10 men. There has been a change of formation to a back three and Chelsea have not looked back, reaching the FA Cup final as well as the Champions League semi-final.
Striker Timo Werner spoke out about how Tuchel’s tactics were the reason behind this rock-solid defence and their progress into the latter stages of the cup competitions.
‘I think he, like everybody can see, changed a lot of players and type of how we play like the manager before. But at the end I think it’s the new system we play now with three in the back. It changed in part of that we don’t concede goals. I think that’s really important. In Germany we say, ‘a good offence wins you games, but a good defence wins you titles’.
‘We always win games like 1-0, 2-0, so always with good defensive work. But also he gives us good structure, in front he gives us different systems. ‘Sometimes we play with a ten and two strikers, sometimes we play with one striker and two tens behind, sometimes with three strikers. So it’s very different how we play. I think it fits us very well.’
While Chelsea might not be the most pleasing on the eye, they are super effective in their approach. They are a hard team to break down as we saw Pep Guardiola’s ultra attacking Man City side could not breach them. The change in tactics and formation are there definitely but it must be applauded as to how well Tuchel has used the resources available to him.
