According to Express, Florentino Perez has warned clubs like Chelsea that they can’t quit the European Super League (ESL). It has been revealed that the 12 founding members have a legally binding contract and they won’t be able to turn their backs on the whole tournament whatever be the situation.
The ESL is a brainchild of Real Madrid president Perez and other American owners of the elite clubs. It is a closed tournament consisting of 15-18 teams who will play each other. This has been seen as a move to recoup the losses made during this pandemic and earn more money than UEFA can provide.
As expected, the news has been met with backlash from pundits as well as fans. UEFA, FIFA and the football governing bodies of the countries have taken a stand to stop this from seeing the light of the day. With sanctions, both legal and sporting, likely to be imposed on Chelsea and the other five Premier League sides.
However, Perez has warned that none of the 12 founding members can back out of the ESL as they have signed a legally binding contract. This is likely after pressure expected from the respective FA of those countries and UEFA.
“The contract of the Super League is binding. Nobody can leave, we will work all together. All the clubs signed the contracts last Saturday, there’s no problem.”
With the situation still at its early stages, it is hard to understand where this will all flow towards. Perez is fully spearheading the ESL plan and has now warned the other clubs of backing out. With UEFA also looking at measures, it will all boil down to which party buckles under pressure from the other.
