A report by The Sun mentions that Chelsea are still “chasing” Ajax left-back, Nicolas Tagliafico. But they are not the only English clubs after him.
The report goes on to mention that Manchester City are also interested in the Argentine international and that Leeds United have now thrown their hat in the ring for him.
Tagliafico was linked with a summer exit last year and Chelsea and City were cited as possible destinations. That, however, did not happen due to the complexities that arose from the Covid-19 pandemic. (h/t The Sun)
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds have had depth issues at left-back this season and Tagliafico’s style would fit their system. And as compared to them, one could argue that the Blues don’t need the 28-year-old as badly.
Thomas Tuchel already has Ben Chilwell, Marcos Alonso, and Emerson Palmieri at his disposal. The former PSG manager tends to favour Alonso but Chilwell is also vying for starts on a regular basis.
And the competition is so stiff that 26-year-old Emerson is yet to play a single minute in the league this season under Tuchel. Overall, he has just 88 minutes of Premier League action since the start of this campaign. (h/t transfermarkt)
But if Chelsea do decide to snap him up, then it is believed that the left-back is available for £17.5m in the summer. His contract expires in the summer of 2023 but he has an agreement to leave the Dutch side this year itself.
And the Blues would also have one less competitor to worry about as Inter Milan, links with whom were favourably responded to by Tagliafico last week, would face difficulties in the summer due to the Covid-19 pandemic. (h/t The Sun)
