According to news from Football.london, the European Super League has been put on hold after Premier League sides such as Chelsea withdrew. On Tuesday all six of the Premier League clubs withdrew one by one from the ESL starting with Chelsea and Man City. Even Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reportedly withdrawn.
On Sunday, 12 elite European clubs passed the proposal of a new ‘European Super League’. The new tournament will be a closed affair with its 12 founding members and a few other clubs. There will be no other teams other than the 20 current participants and that is what has irked the footballing community.
It would be putting it mildly that this ESL idea was met with severe backlash. Pundits, managers, players and fans spoke up against the issue to the point that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson got involved. Protests were seen outside Stamford Bridge as Petr Cech was seen trying to quell the fans.
However, as the six English clubs backed out, the ESL provided a statement that vaguely hinted at the fact that this plan is on the back burner for now.
“Despite the announced departure of the English clubs, forced to take such decisions due to the pressure out [sic] on them, we are convinced our proposal is fully aligned with European law and regulations as was demonstrated today by a court decision to protect the Super League from third party actions.
“Given the current circumstances, we shall reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project, always having in mind our goals of offering the fans the best experience possible while enhancing solidarity payments for the entire football community.”
It comes as good news to fans of the football fraternity that such a competition was not allowed to see the light of day. One can’t help but think that a lot of these clubs backed out due to the backlash faced on all fronts. For now, football can continue as we know and love it.
